We partnered with an industry leader in audio solutions to develop the next generation of a marine and motorsports speaker/subwoofers. The goals stretched beyond just a redesign - we wanted to develop a solution that catered to both legacy customers as well as new users searching for audio upgrades. Our solution resulted in a unique patent for simplistic grill interchangeability.
The Challenge
One grill to support multiple looks
How do you create multiple looks with the same functional part? We were tasked with creating a next generation look for Rockford’s M series speakers and subwoofers – a core challenge was catering to both long term customers as well as newer generation of audio enthusiasts.
The previous generation M2 line had a signature style and look – incorporating a bold stainless steel grill with a distinct hexagonal pattern. The goal was not to completely lose this look, but it also didn’t incorporate well into many marine/motorsport installations.
Our Approach
When Rockford Fosgate approached us to redesign the M2 line, they asked us to develop solutions for two speaker variants. From the start, we focused on preserving the brand’s existing identity across both designs. However, rather than creating two separate models, we identified an opportunity to deliver a single SKU while still giving users flexibility: an interchangeable grille system that lets them choose the look they prefer without changing the core product or sacrificing brand value.
Our Solution
We delivered two grille inserts that ship with every M2 speaker order, allowing end users to quickly customize the look. They can keep the iconic Rockford Fosgate steel grille or swap to a modern six-spoke option. A common trim ring base reduced the cost for providing multiple styles to customize.
The Outcome
With our innovative solution, we created new IP for Rockford Fosgate while eliminating the need for separate tooling across two distinct products. This reduced cost and increased overall company value. With multiple grille options, users can dial in their personalized-on water style all to match the look of their SXS or boat.
